How do I upload my entry?
As we are getting to the deadline of the King Lear Prizes 2021, I have noticed that my inbox has been full of questions about submitting your final piece. Here is a walk through guide of how to submit your piece for each category. If you have any questions, let me know.
All King Lear entries work by uploading your piece to the entry form. There are boxes to enter in your personal details so we can contact you if you win, and some questions so we know how long you’ve been creating. You can also select which category you are entering, and if you wish to enter the Beginner or Experienced Amateur category.
The information below should help combat any difficulties you have in uploading your entry to the form.
Entering Real Story or Poetry
If you are entering the Real Story or Poetry categories, it is important to get your final draft ready to upload to the entry form.
You can do this in several ways. If you are using a laptop or computer, you should have a writing programme already installed: this is probably Microsoft Word or Pages (if you have an Apple product). You can open up this application and type up your poem or story, and format it to your liking. If you only have an iPad, Pages should be installed on your iPad. The icon for Pages is orange/yellow with a white pencil.
If you’re struggling to use these applications, you can watch a video to help you. This is a useful tutorial for Microsoft Word. And this is a useful tutorial for Pages. When you have typed up your entry, save it to your device. Make sure to title it something clear so you can recognize it later! If I was entering a poem I might title it in the format Surname_PoemTitle (i.e. Houston-Brown_Poem), which makes it easy to search for and find.
If you don’t want to type up the work, you can just take a photo of a handwritten work on your phone or iPad. Then save it to your device.
If you are finding it difficult to upload a photo from your iPad / Phone to the form, then you can transfer it to your laptop or computer. There are many ways to do this, so people can suggest lots of different ways. For example, you can upload the photo to a OneDrive or Google Drive app and access these drives on your computer. However, many people find it easier just to email it to themselves! You can just attach the image to an email and send it to your own email address. Then access your email on your computer or laptop. Make sure to save it to your computer.
Open up the King Lear Prizes form and fill it out. Once you get to the part of the form that reads “Please Upload your King Lear Prizes entry”, you should see a grey box that reads “Browse Files”. If you can drag and drop your files that’s great. If your computer doesn’t allow that function just click on the box. Your File Explorer should then pop up and you can search for your document to upload. Make sure to click ‘open’ on your File Explorer!
Ta-da, you should be done. If you’re still having issues, scroll down to the bottom of this blog post for some FAQs to see if your issue is covered.
Entering Art
If you are entering the Art category, it is important to get your art photographed to upload to the entry form.
The easiest way to do this is to take a photo of your art on your phone or tablet (i.e. iPad). Then make sure it is saved to your device.

Entering Musical Composition
If you are entering the Musical Composition category, it is important to get your composition recorded to upload to the entry form.
We already have a really helpful blog post on this, so read this first! You can record on your phone or iPad using a voice memo or by recording a video. An audio recording only will probably be smaller and therefore easier to upload in the long run.

I have some questions!
I can’t email the file to myself! What should I do? There are multiple ways you can transfer a file from your iPad/Phone to your computer, email is just the easiest. Why don’t you create an account for OneDrive or Google Drive? Here is a video on how to use Onedrive, and here for Google Drive.
I’m struggling to record my piece! What can I use? I would recommend using a voice recording app on your phone or iPad. One already downloaded on your device will be a ‘Voice Memo’ app, which you can search for and use.
I can’t drag and drop my files on the form. How do I do that? You don’t need to drag and drog. Just click ‘Browse Files’ , and a file explorer will pop up!
I have questions about the form. Can you clarify? I can! But you can also go through the form yourself, fill out your details and just not press the final submit. This will mean you will discover everything that’s on the form without submitting your piece.
